Marine Big 5 Whale and Shark Tours

Whale, Shark and Marine Wildlife eco boat trips

This is an oceanic adventure for families and nature lovers to get up-close with some of the world’s most majestic creatures. Aboard the custom-designed Dream Catcher, guests will spot South Africa’s marine ‘big five’, namely whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins. Every year between July and December, the waters of Kleinbaai becomes the breeding ground for southern right whales, often witnessed jumping and, blowing and spraying.

However, southern right whales aren’t the only species to frequent these waters. Bryde's whales, humpback whales, and various species of dolphin can be seen all year long. You will stop at the 60 000 strong seal colony and the iconic Dyer Island, home to endangered African penguins and various sea bird. An on-board marine biologist accompanies each tour, sharing information on the animals and the local marine ecosystem.

This term Marine Big 5 was coined by Dyer Island Cruises in the seaside town of Gansbaai, who could rightfully consider themselves the Serengeti of the sea as Gansbaai is the only place in the world where you can see the full marine big five on one trip. Up-close encounters with the Marine Big 5 in their natural habitat is a sight few have the privilege to witness.

Join Dyer Island Cruises on a purpose-built eco-friendly tour vessel and enjoy a trip led by experienced marine biologists and guides. Every trip offers a possibility of a whole Marine Big 5 experience!
